LOVE PILSEN

Pilsen is a predominantly Mexican neighborhood on the southwest side of Chicago that has been thriving for over 50 years with the continual upholding of their culture in a space much different than where it originated. Each 4th of July they’re easily the best party in town, filling all of the residential streets with food stands, lawn chairs, and batches of fireworks launching at every other corner. The beauty of the culture is plastered over countless walls of art lining it’s streets, though this beauty is best seen through the members of the community. Pilsen is mostly full of those identifying with Mexican culture, but has welcomed those of different backgrounds also. These photos are covering a community event in a central park held by Oasis Church Chicago that functioned as a school drive. These kids were able to receive adequate school supplies if needed, as well as enjoy time with their families. There was live music, bounce houses, face paintings, free lunch, and firetruck rides! It was the hope that this service would communicate the love God gives without any expectation of reciprocation. Many happenings during this time were moments of unity that defy much of the false characterization of violence and division that this city carries.
